Govan is the man (HEY that rhymed!)

Seriously, this guy can do anything with a guitar. Not only one of the best players out today, but one of the best teachers. Guthrie Govan really gives you insight on some of his techniques, and it's up to you how/where to use them in your playing. Yet, I wouldn't recommend this book to a beginner or even the early-stage intermediate player. Some of the topics and techniques can get really gnarly, but there very effective for the guitarist who plays 3 hours a day everyday. This book is pointless if you can't play the exercises and most of these exercises will take a while to conceptualize even for the seasoned player. That being said, I love this book and I love his playing. The CD that comes with the book is pretty much Guthrie Govan showing off for a few hours, but was needed to hear reference to what you are reading about. Govan is the man and his musical prowess will grow further as time goes on, I expect awesome things from him on both the playing, as well as the teaching side.

Received it with bent pages so I had to keep it under some heavy books for a while. But it's the content that is important and this book kicks ass. Guthrie Govan is not only an amazing guitarist, he's also a fantastic teacher. I would definitely buy this book again. But be sure to get the first book in the series too.

A great creative spur

I have been a great fan of Guthrie Govan (the author of this book) since I read his articles in the pages of Guitar Techniques magazine (also a great resource):)
I really liked the way the author summarized and verbalized the techniques that are involved in playing. For me, it was a great way to explain how each technique should look like and feel like which for this part, I believe is the sign of a good teaching technique.
This book is great for people who have played for a while and think are pretty familiar with the majority of concepts the instrument has to offer and Guthrie here throws a monkey wrench into the system. As guitarists we realize that the comibations and scale patterns are virtually endless but he offers combinations and ideas that sound melodious and musical.
I particularly liked the sections on picking (a great simple explanation of a big topic), the immitation of other instruments on the guitar (now I don't need that mandolin) and the two handed techniques deserve hours and hours of expirementation.
If you have been playing for several years and if you feel like you in a bit of a rut this one is for you.

Ted Kluck is the award-winning author of a dozen books. He has played professional indoor football, coached high school football, trained as a professional wrestler, served as a missionary, and taught writing courses at the college level. Ted’s work has appeared in ESPN the Magazine, Sports Spectrum Magazine, and ESPN.com Page 2. A bi-monthly column for Sports Spectrum Magazine entitled “Pro and Con” won the Evangelical Press Association award for best standing column in 2003. Living in the Past

As lifelong football fans, we sometimes find ourselves pining for what we consider to be, the good-old days. Kluck has found a way to relive the experience of 1970s football by competing with others in something called the Odyssey Football League, an online simulation league where players are drafted from a certain year, teams are built and games are played against other teams that are put together the same way. In this case, Kluck and the other members of the OFL replayed the 1978 NFL season using actual players from that year.

I like I'd so much, I joined the league!

Ted has a very engaging writing style. The book is an extremely entertaining look at not only football, but society.mmits funny,witty, nostalgic, readable, and it has a lot of football in it. What else could you want?! And yes, I looked into the OFL (Odyssey Football League) after reading Ted's book, found that they had an opening, and joined. Go Grizzlies!

About the Author

Clark Strand is a spiritual writer and former Zen Buddhist monk who was previously senior editor of Tricycle magazine. He is the author of How to Believe in God: Whether You Believe in Religion or Not and Meditation Without Gurus as well as countless groundbreaking articles, including the first comprehensive feature article ever written in English on internet spirituality. He has founded and led spiritual study groups, taught workshops and retreats, lectured at colleges and universities, and has spoken at some of the largest Buddhist gatherings ever held in America. He lives in Woodstock, New York.

Quite a good job

I am a Nichiren Buddhist, probably like so many others who bought the book. I was amazed at the author's profound understanding of the Nichiren Buddhism. For someone who doesn't practice this philosophy he did quite a good job of explaining it. The deeper elements were missing but then I had to keep reminding myself that since he doesn't practice it, there would be limits to his understanding. I think the one thing that stood out was when he mentioned that different people have said to him that Nichiren
Buddhist "isn't really a religion". I'm surprised that he didn't clarify that by "religion" most people mean a "God" outside of themselves; whereas this Buddhism believes that the "god" is within....that we are the Buddha. He did speak of personal responsibility for changing lives without mentioning begging some exterior being for help. He sort of danced around the issue perhaps not wanting to offend anyone that we don't believe that a "God" exists. However he did a mighty job and I was impressed. And in fact I DID learn new things.

Deeply inspiring!!

Having read essays by Clark Strand previously, I was really looking forward to reading his book, "Waking the Buddha". It was even more engaging than I imagined and I read it in only one sitting. Mr. Strand's accounts of the fearlessness of the first three Soka Gakkai Presidents, Tsunesaburo Makiguchi, Josei Toda and Daisaku Ikeda, deeply inspired me and re-ignited a fighting spirit in my own life.

The extaordinary SGI movement so eloquently explained!

What a great book...thank you Mr. Clark Strand! I was one of those baby boomers who delved into Buddhism after the social turbulence of the sixties...ricocheting from transcendental meditation to New Thought and eventually becoming a student of the Theravada. Always a seeker...but never completely satisfied. Meanwhile, the world became darker as human beings continue to wage war with one another and destroy nature. One day I was presented with a card that had Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo inscribed on it. It sat on my desk for a few years but I eventually researched, studied, and embraced this practice. It transformed my life!

This book explains the SGI movement and its vision for the world to experience lasting peace and security through humanity's embrace of the humanistic principles of Buddhism. Nichiren Buddhism is practical Buddhism. Progress in your practice leads to changes within you. These changes are always marked by concurrent changes in your environment, which mirrors your inner life. This is Cause and Effect. Faith in Nichiren Buddhism is constantly directed toward transforming reality.
