About the Author

Paul G. Hewitt

Former silver-medal boxing champion, sign painter, uranium prospector, and soldier, Paul began college at the age of 27, with the help of the GI Bill. He pioneered the conceptual approach to teaching physics at the City College of San Francisco. He has taught as a guest teacher at various middle schools and high schools, the University of California at both the Berkeley and Santa Cruz campuses, and the University of Hawaii at both the Manoa and Hilo campuses. He also taught for 20 years at the Exploratorium in San Francisco, which honored him with its Outstanding Educator Award in 2000. He is the author of Conceptual Physics and a co-author of Conceptual Physical Science and Conceptual Physical Science Explorations (with John Suchocki and Leslie Hewitt).

Simple to Use, Fun to Read!

Pros: Simple to Use, Diagrams, Quizzes, Answers in Back

Cons: Not much explanation in mathematics.

Rented book to use in a Conceptual Physics course and love it! I was dreading physics but with a good professor and an easy to read book, with many diagrams, pictures, and explanations, physics was made much easier! I would recommend this book to those interested in physics to gain a basic understanding of physics.

General physics primer

If you want to learn about physics, this is the book for you. It's all here, in plain English. Starts off pretty simple, and you might think you already know it. Trust me, review the material in the terms in which it's presented. Later on, when you get to more complex subjects like magnetism, you'll be glad you took the time to study simple acceleration.
The cartoonish illustrations are quite helpful and the photo examples featuring friends, family, students, and luminaries of the field are quite endearing. So not only does this book cover a lot of ground, it has a personal touch that makes the material quite approachable.

Necessary information presented with many pictures and graphs. We used it for a basic introductory class. I needed to reread some paragraphs, but basically understandable, good practice problems at end of each chapter.

DICE was founded in May 1992 in Växjö, Sweden by Ulf Mandorff, Olof Gustafsson, Fredrik Liliegren, Andreas Axelsson and Markus Nyström, members of the former demogroup The Silents. Nice game art companion

The Art of Mirror's Edge: Catalyst is 200-page hardcover concept art book that features mostly character and environment art.

If you like the environment, you'll be glad to know that the book shows you a good amount of visual development work that goes behind conceptualising the city. The amount of detail in the design and models look great. As for the feeling, everything appears very high key, very bright, airy, dreamy with the occasional glow. Because of that, it also makes the city looks almost too clean which is actually in line the city of Glass in the game.

I like how the sleek and modern the buildings look. There are a couple of more outlandish designs but overall it's not too drastically different from real life cities. The rooftops in the games are much cleaner though. Where do all those people hide their air-conditioning units?

There are character designs for the main characters. Faith of course has more pages showing us the different types of clothes, shoes, gloves designs before the final chosen one. Other characters usually have one or two pages, such as Noah, Icarus, Nomad, Rebecca, Dogen, Birdman, Plastic. There are more pages on the enforcers from KrugerSec and the main antagonists. You can see they get a lot of inspiration from military and tactical uniforms and gear.

There are a handful of storyboards and action scenes to prevent the book from feeling too static but I think there could be more.

The occasional captions talk about the designs but they are usually just one paragraph. The other text would be the lengthy chapter openings. Generally speaking, there's not a lot of text, so don't worry about story spoilers.

Overall a good game art companion. Fans should enjoy it, as well as those who like cityscapes environment art.

Inspiring. But I have no idea what to do now.

This was the book that introduced me to permacuture. I had never even heard the term before, but stumbled upon it when I found this book at a local Barnes &Noble. The first third or so of the book introduces permaculture principles and the philosophy behind it. That alone is incredibly inspiring and maybe want to read more deeply. Unfortunately, I finished reading the book with little idea about how to begin. There are some areas that are somewhat helpful (e.g., section that explains an ideal permaculture garden), and it has some practical suggestions some suggestions, but I would really like to see a worksheet, or a how-to guide, or a bunch of case studies.

So, five stars for being inspiring, but 4 stars for practicality.

This is a most readable, in-depth and scholarly examination of prejudice and racism. The author discusses the different definitions of prejudice and racism and how people come to understand their meaning as well as learn the behaviors associated with these beliefs and attitudes. A helpful guide through very difficult concepts and perplexing behavior with clear research and everyday real life examples. This book clarifys the distinctions between prejudice, racism, and discrimination. A truly interdisciplinary text, excellent resource, or simply an enlightening book for all disciplines and persons interested in this topic.

About the Author

Yogesh Chavan

Yogesh Chavan is a Linux enthusiast and open source promoter, living in Pune, India. He has now been teaching operating systems, device drivers, and embedded systems in colleges and institutes for more than three years. These include the computer science department of Pune University, Symbiosis Institute of Computer Studies and Research (SICSR) college, and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) institute. He has about six years of experience in the software industry. His previous industrial role was of a software maintenance engineer at Red Hat Software Services. Yogesh has overseen many engineering projects under GEEP (http://www.geeksofpune.in). He has given many talks at the annual open source event, GNUnify (http://gnunify.in). Yogesh enjoys cutting edge technologies. He is a hardware hobbyist who likes playing with smartphones, tablets, routers, and Arduino. He is big fan of Android and various Linux distributions. Lots of solid but disconnected information

The book covers quite a fair bit of topics on the BeagleBone series (all three versions). I have a lot of experience using Arduino's and Raspberry Pi's and was hoping this book would enable me to quickly get my skills up to par with those platforms. Unfortunately the coverage is pretty much disconnected and there isn't a lot of discussion on practical application of the topics covered. Additionally I may be overly sensitive because I read so many books but I found most of the phrasing used for the sentences very odd. This caused me to frequently need to re-read sentences to make sure I understood them. This was really distracting and ended up detracting from the enjoyment of the book. On the positive side there are some notably good sections. I really found the coverage of the UART, SPI, and I2C protocols helpful. Overall I found some value from the book but it fell short of my hopes.

Don't expect to buy this book and just go over it once, you'll be reading it a few times to fully understand all the material, or at least I did. I liked how the book was broken down into two sections which encompassed the overall areas of development for creating IoT technology and that was what I wanted to see in action, I wasn't disappointed.

The Adventures of Tintin (Les Aventures de Tintin) is a series of comic strips created by Belgian artist Herge the pen name of Georges Remi (1907 1983). The series first appeared in French in Le Petit Vingtieme, a children's supplement to the Belgian newspaper Le Vingtieme Siecle on 10 January 1929. Herge himself features in several of the comics as a background character; as do his assistants in some instances.
The success of the series saw the serialized strips collected into a series of albums (24 in all), spun into a successful magazine and adapted for film and theatre. The series is one of the most popular European comics of the 20th century, with translations published in over 50 languages and more than 200 million copies of the books sold to date.
The comic strip series has long been admired for its clean, expressive drawings in Herge's signature ligne claire style. Engaging, well-researched plots straddle a variety of genres: swashbuckling adventures with elements of fantasy, mysteries, political thrillers, and science fiction. The stories within the Tintin series always feature slapstick humor, accompanied in later albums by sophisticated satire, and political and cultural commentary.

Herge, one of the most famous Belgians in the world, was a comics writer and artist. The internationally successful Adventures of Tintin are his most well-known and beloved works. Ironically, you should read the first Tintin adventure last

The value of "Tintin au Pays des Soviets" ("Tintin in the Land of the Soviets") is as much historical as it is literary since this is the first of Les Aventures de Tintin created by Hergé. The date is January 10, 1929 and in Brussels the intrepid young reporter for "Le Petit Vingtième" Tintin and his dog Milou board a train for Moscow. There Tintin spends his time denouncing the methods of the Communist Party and then avoiding attempts by the Soviet secret police to silence him for his views. By the time Tintin makes it back home word of his exploits has arrived ahead of him and he is greeted as a hero.
Today "Tintin au Pays des Soviets" constitutes something of a false start for Hergé's series. The seven volume collection of the Three-in-One series of "The Adventures of Tintin," which is probably the most common way for today's readers to get a hold of the Tintin stories, begins with the third adventures, "Tintin Au America." Both this story and "Tintin Au Congo" are left out of the "official" canon, the former because of the suspect ideology and the latter because of the implicit racism. What emerges in the other eighteen Tintin tales is more pure storytelling that takes place in a created world that bears only an allegorical relationship to the real world. Besides, Tintin does not even have his trademark tuft of hair at this point.
Consequently, Tintin fans who track down the first couple of adventures will need to take both tales with a grain of salt. Whereas the other stories tend to stand on their own, the first two are clearly dated. "Tintin au Pays des Soviets" especially requires commentary or annotation that reveals exactly what was going on in the Soviet Union in the late 1920s that Hergé and the left found necessary to attack, even in a comic book adventure. I know that Hergé was working for "Le Petit Vingtième," an anti-Communist church-run newspaper, but I also know that he also apologized for this book later in life because he had never actually visited the Soviet Union and had based his story on one book, which was apparently written for propaganda purposes.
Consequently, it is fairly safe to say that this particular Tintin adventure is really not intended for children until they are old enough to understand the politics of the time in which it was written. It might be ironic that you should read the first couple of Tintin adventures after you have read the other eighteen, but that is probably the best way to proceed.

Amazing how, in 1929, a comic book could reveal more truth about Bolshevik Russia, than all the hypocritical and cruel academics of the world could.
While the Western fellow travelers of the Soviet tyranny, where presenting the Soviet Union, as a utopian brave new world, Herge reveled the true hell on earth that it was (and that all Marxist-Leninist regimes have been since), through this amazing adventure, and the true villainy of the Communists and their Western backers.
Who knows how the immoral leftist academics are deceiving us today.
Moral clarity and simplicity is needed more than ever today, as the Judeo-Christian world, and our great Western civilization , is threatened by evil forces today, in new guises, and much of the intellectual and media establishment turns it around and condemns those who are fighting to sustain freedom while sanitizes devils.
And anyway , it is a great Tinitn adventure , vital to everyone's Tintin collection.
