Well crafted and useful

I purchased this book to understand some aspects of secured transactions and related matters of the Uniform Commercial Code. While I am no lawyer, I have some knowledge of law as a banker. I found this book to be useful and well designed. The coverage is quite broad in scope and deep in time as well. Stone explains the impact of each provision in terms of the latest UCC revision as well as previous versions. He also provides several examples and the text is very well cross referenced with UCC provisions and related cases. The language too is simple without being condescending. I don't know about professional lawyers or law students but as a manager with some knowledge of the law, I found the book helpful in answering my questions. At the very least, it helped me build up some basic knowledge and better prepared me for the ensuing legal consultations.

I absolutely LOVE Mark Hayes' arrangements

I absolutely LOVE Mark Hayes' arrangements! They incorporate a lot of great jazz harmonies and rhythms, without EVER losing the heart and sound of the original song. Some of them are CRAZY difficult to play, and take a LOT of work to learn, but the results are well worth it. This book is definitely NOT for the beginner, though. It requires intermediate to advanced skills to play these multi-layered and complex arrangements.

I particularly liked the lively arrangement of "When the Roll is Called Up Yonder" with a little "When We All Get To Heaven" thrown in for good measure. The wistful "I Will Arise and Go to Jesus" is really beautiful! Really, there is NOTHING in this book that is not simply outstanding!

Excellent Advanced Sacred Solos!

As the other reviewers have said, this book is excellent and truly advanced. Yet, it's not so advanced that an advanced pianist will have to work months on each song. The arrangements have a lot of grandeur, and often flowing sweetness, too. This book is neither a boring copycat of every other book nor a compilation of bizarre arrangements full of discords. It's fresh - incredible to hear and play.

Here is a listing of the contents, since I'm sure many would like to know:
1. Sweet By and By (5 Pages)
2. He Hideth My Soul (4 Pages)
3. When I Can Read my Title Clear (4 Pages)
4. Heavenly Sunlight (6 Pages)
5. I Will Arise and Go to Jesus (4 Pages)
6. In the Garden (5 Pages)
7. I'll Fly Away (5 Pages)
8. There is a Balm in Gilead (5 Pages)
9. When the Roll is Called up Yonder (6 Pages)
10. On Jordan's Stormy Banks (4 Pages)
11. The Old Rugged Cross (5 Pages)
12. How Great Thou Art (7 Pages)

I would include the keys they are written in, but there is at least one key change in every song, sometimes several. Often the songs have complicated keys (such as 4 or 5 flats) with interludes of easy ones. It keeps the songs interesting.
The Old Rugged Cross and How Great Thou Art are very advanced and absolutely thrilling to play. Definitely my favorites!

Fundamental in an Advanced Way

With the plethora of neuroscience textbooks on the market -- many in their second, third, or more editions -- and not having read any of these textbooks other than Fundamental Neuroscience (4th ed.), I'm not in a position to state with any certainty that this text is superior or inferior to these other textbooks, nor can I declare the appropriate audience for this textbook.

It is a challenge to read. I cannot imagine it being used at the undergraduate level because one needs a solid foundation in biochemistry, molecular and cell biology, and human anatomy and physiology in order to fully appreciate the riches this book has to offer. It covers in exquisitely comprehensive detail the molecular and cellular foundations of neuroscience. Developmental neuroscience and motor systems are similarly well covered. The book begins to falter a little on sensory systems and regulatory systems, and the quality declines precipitously with the cognitive neuroscience section.

The section I was most looking forward to, the section on cognitive neuroscience, was in my opinion the weakest in the book. This section did have some interesting things to say about perception as opposed to mere vision (vision will tell us we have an orange blob in front of us; perception tells us if it is a fruit or a basketball) as well as attention and memory, although I thought the two chapters on memory could have been strengthened considerably because a discussion of the various types of memory was absent. Prospective memory was not mentioned at all. The chapter on the prefrontal cortex and executive functioning was anemic, and the closing chapter on consciousness, a mere ten pages in an eleven hundred page book, was a throwaway, asking far more questions than it attempted to answer.

The various chapters were written by subject matter experts, and the text as a whole focuses on neuroscience at the cellular and molecular level, even in the chapters on memory, thus tying the book together into a coherent whole despite the many cooks adding to the broth. Notwithstanding the occasional eye-glazing prose, it is a clear and well-written text. The book is well-seasoned with diagrams, charts and other visual materials that amplify the text. Because I was an autodidact studying this book, I found some online tutorials very helpful as a supplement to my studies, especially the materials made freely available on the World-Wide Web by the University of Texas at Houston.

If you're looking for an advanced, intensive text on neuroscience, then I can recommend this one, with the caveats about the short shrift given to the prefrontal cortex and consciousness mentioned above. I'm sure its primary use is as a textbook accompanying a graduate level or medical school course in neuroscience, but as long as you have the needed background in cellular biology, biochemistry, and physiology, then this definitely is a book worth considering. I'm glad I'm studying this material on my own, at my own pace, and using supplemental materials found on the web. To try to master the material covered in this book over the span of an academic year seems overwhelming; I'm definitely glad I don't have to face any exams! However, I was very satisfied with the degree this text advanced my knowledge on neuroscience so that I may delve deeper into the subject.

NOT for the inexperienced

If you need this book for a JAVA class, of course buy it here.

If you are trying to learn java on your own, I do not recommend this one unless you are already an experienced programmer in object oriented languages.

It is very tough, and would be impossible to follow for someone new to programming.
