Excellent
By Purity is Myth
If you could judge a book by its cover, choose this one. The cover picture is delicious, and so is the book! The book will be like a mother to you - it guides you through each step as if no one had ever taught you carefully, sensitively enough, how to learn a language on your own. I say this book is not tedious because it doesn't ask you to simply figure that part (the self-teaching part) out all on your own. On the other hand, if you already know how to teach yourself, that's not a problem - just skim through those parts.

I have used Teach Yourself: Swahili by Joan Russell, Kiswahili Kwa Kitendo, and Swahili: A Foundation... by Hinnebusch, and I have already basically gone through two semester's worth of Swahili, but this one put together by native East Africans is my favorite and still has a lot to teach me after all that. It starts you out with a friendly introduction to each lesson, gives you a warm-up, and the dialogues are longer than in other courses, especially the non-audio ones. Dialogues also come with translations. As usual, there's a list of vocab and, like Teach Yourself, there's a list of key phrases, but unlike Teach yourself, they are more than just translations from the dialogue. Culture notes are a lot of fun and quite elaborate and practical:

"When you get to your table, you won't find napkins (tishu) waiting there for you. Napkins are generally available at the restaurant counter, and customers help themselves. Don't be surprised if you see other customers eating with their hands; this is acceptable table manners in many parts of the world. If you choose to eat with your hand, be sure to use your right hand, as eating with the left hand is considered to be at least odd, if not downright rude and unhygienic, especially in Muslim communities... When you're ready to pay the bill, simply ask naomba kulipa (can I pay?)..."

There are also readings which come in Swahili with English translation. These readings are simpler than in other courses, which makes them less tedious - I'm not sure if that means you get less out of it. Then there are grammar notes. There are the exercises, which are plentiful and simple; answer key at the end of the lesson. Finally, there's an independent study box in each lesson which just suggests how you can enhance your learning experience, but it's a good reminder if you are bad about keeping up with journals and the like, or if you've never studied a language before.

The audio is much better than Teach Yourself: the voices are clearer, with better enunciation. Also, Teach Yourself fills up half of the recordings with annoying English-speakers who are just telling you about the dialogue, which Living Language doesn't do. You end up with about 12 times more audio than Teach Yourself. There are two sections to the audio: one you listen to along with the lesson, the other is supplemental and can be listened to any time.

Another great thing about this course is that it's brand new and very modern! Each lesson has a salient theme, which is drilled into you by its recurrence in each part of the lesson. And there are a lot of parts to each lesson - it's very elaborate! Unique to this book is its inclusion of a lesson on internet language. This course doesn't look very long, and although I have only glanced at most of it, it seems unlikely to be quite as thorough as Hinnebusch. If you are very intent on learning the language, it couldn't hurt to have both Hinnebusch and this book, but this one would be my first recommendation for the independent learner.

The best one yet!

During a recent visit to Tanzania I became fascinated with the people there and with Swahili. In my enthusiasm and desire to learn Swahili in the most elegant way possible, I purchased about 8 books and 3 audio programs. When I happened upon this book listing in Amazon.com I almost didn't buy it thinking that I already had more books than I needed. However, I was intrigued by the first reader's review and decided to take a chance on it. I was not dissapointed!!! I totally agree with the first review. This book and set of tapes is the clearest and most "user-friendly" program to date. I am very pleased with the style and extremely well-integrated teaching process. If, unlike me, you want to buy only ONE book - I would recommnend this one.

This book is simply amazing. I am in complete agreement with the first two people who commented on it. As they have already done an excellent job of describing it, I just wanted to put forward another positive opinion.

The book is very easy to use, very informational about the language and culture, and guides you very smoothly throughout, ultimately leading you to a strong intermediate level in Swahili. This book was immensely fun to use, and my motivation for studying the language dropped off quite a bit, because I knew that my remaining resource at that point was Teach Yourself Swahili, which isn't nearly as good.

I had used much of this book and TY Swahili before going to Tanzania for two weeks in July, and I can say that it was very helpful and the people I met there were incredulous at my abilities in the language. I credit my success in Swahili to this book and I think it is a must-have for all learners of Swahili!

Lucy, the 15-year-old heroine of this bittersweet debut novel, quite literally doesn't fit in. At six-foot-plus (she has stopped measuring her height), she is the butt of constant teasing at her school in small-town Alaska; at home, her room, with its low angled ceiling and "doll-sized" bed, is so small she can't even stretch her legs out in it. Her mother abandoned the family years ago, leaving Lucy to dodge the rages of her alcoholic, unemployed father. Smith sets the stage quickly. In the opening scene, Lucy performs her almost nightly ritual of hauling her dad home after he passes out in a bar. Upset by the sudden death of the stray dog she had befriended, Lucy impulsively walks to the airport and, mistaken for a member of a "work tour," boards a charter flight to Kodiak. There, she wins a drinking contest in a bar and lands a job on a crabbing boat. Smith makes up for weaknesses in the dialogue with compelling descriptions of the harrowing storms at sea, backbreaking yet satisfying work on board and the heroine's deepening friendships with several crew members. Although Lucy's ability to pass for an adult strains credibility somewhat, as does the ending, her first-person narration is affecting. Ages 12-up.

Grade 7-10-At 15, Lucy Otsego is six feet tall and stocky of build. She lives in Sitka, AK, with her drunken father and with the taunts of many of her classmates. Her Haida mother left the family when Lucy was seven and the girl longs for her without being able to remember her clearly. After adopting a stray, Lucy pulls herself out of her emotional slump-only to fall again and hard when the dog dies in spite of an emergency trip to the unaffordable veterinarian. Depressed and feeling hopeless, she ditches school and, without making any real plan, boards the small plane that takes fishing crews north to Kodiak. Because of her size and her ability to keep her own council, Lucy has no trouble beginning life anew, this time as an adult woman named Barbara. She gets a job aboard a crabbing boat and makes friends with most of the crew, but an enemy of one disgruntled crabber. Her first fishing run is a success; during her second, her nemesis tells her secret. A storm at sea brings both crew and novel to the climax, and the teen is given yet a third try at life after nearly drowning. Lucy's adventures end on a hopeful and credible note; she's back with her father in Sitka, yet she knows that her friends-both in Sitka and in Kodiak-are there for her. Fast paced and emotionally resonant, this novel will be easy to booktalk and to get into appreciative hands.

A Giant Tale

I loved this novel about 15 year old Lucy who runs away from a sad life with her alcoholic dad to a new life. The new life gives her a taste of what it's like to be with people who care about her. The Alaska setting and the chapters that take place on the crabbing boat on the Bering Sea are my favorite. Anyone who enjoys the TV show The Deadliest Catch will enjoy the up close experience of worrying about Lucy as she struggles to survive the ice storm and other dangers of a life at sea. Secondary characters are terrific. This is a quick read and a good choice for teens and adults who want to read an exciting story with nail-biting suspense and a sentimental heart.

Terrific book!

An enjoyable read from start to finish! Terrific detail and a strong voice make this book really unique and believable. Many teen readers will relate to Lucy's struggling to play the role of an adult with parts of herself still a kid...all in the context of a high seas adventure. A great follow-up for kids who loved Avi's The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle in grade school! One of the best YA's of the the year so far, I hope this author gets the accolades she deserves!

5 Giant Stars for Lucy!

Lucy is a real page turner! I couldn't put the book down once I started reading. The heroine is a strong and believable character. She has had to grow strong due to living with an inattentive, alcoholic father and no mother. She is ackwardly taller than the other students in school. Her life takes another tragic turn which leads her on a great adventure away from home, where she must live and act as an adult. I think teen-aged readers, both girls and boys, can identify with Lucy on many levels. What teenager doesn't have family issues and/or some feeling of physical ackwardness? The character inspires by being strong, yet vulnerable. It is also refreshing to read about a teenage girl with more interesting thoughts than worries about boys and clothes. This is an adventurous yet "real" story that both teens and adults can enjoy! I can't wait to see more books by Sherri L. Smith.

Bloom and Fawcett : A Textbook of Histology (white book)

I used this book in both my undergraduate science courses and those in medical school during the first two years. This text has excellent photos of electron microscope images, as well as micrographs, schematic depictions, photomicrographs and more. I have seen all or most of these depictions in many of my practical examinations and was adequately prepared because of this book. The text is clear, concise and informative. I highly recommend this book without hesitation. Good luck finding one, though! My histology instructor really wanted to buy mine, but I wouldn't sell!

My copy has yellowing pages and the spine is broken, but I still cannot find a more valuable reference not only for histology but also to understand the complexity of organ structure and function. It doesn't get any better and will never be out of date, even if it is out of print!!!

About the Author
Brian Marick learned Ruby in 2001 because Dave Thomas and Andy Hunt, original authors of "Programming Ruby", wouldn't let him off a shuttle bus until he said he would. He's been programming in it ever since, and he's made a special effort to teach it to software testers. His previous book is "Everyday Scripting with Ruby", which began as a tutorial for those very testers. He's not a Ruby programmer by trade. He makes most of his money as a consultant in the Agile methodologies. (After getting off the shuttle bus, he was one of the authors of the "Manifesto for Agile Software Development.")

Excellent scripting and ruby introduction

Everyday Scripting in Ruby is an introduction book to Ruby for people who script a lot. I guess I'm not really the target audience as I wasn't new to Ruby and neither to scripting. Yet, I started reading this book out of curiosity and ended up finishing the whole book. It is definitively a book that I would recommend if you want to learn writing scripts in Ruby.

The book consists of 4 parts, each gradually increasing in difficulty. The first part is called "Basics" and, as it says, covers the very basics of Ruby starting with objects and message sending and also introducing the irb. The Basics part also covers string manipulation, arrays and conditional logic. The second part is called "Growing a Script" and expands on introducing the ruby language by introducing booleans, regular expressions and booleans. Also, to me the most interesting part of the book, Brian explains how he gradually builds up scripts.

The Third part is called "Working in a World Full of People" and covers how to grow a script to take error handling and different input into account. It introduces Hashes and Modules. After this part, most basic ruby knowledge is covered and, if the reader can put that in practice he ought to be a pretty ok scripter. There is a final part called "The Accomplished Scripter" in which the author explains the watchdog framework he wrote using that to explain how to build frameworks.

The book did more than I expected. When I curiously started reading it, I expected it to just explain Ruby (and didn't expected to finish the book). However, I found that following the author writing his scripts made the book, for me, worth reading. That is, following the thoughts of the author and how he gradually build up his scripts. It is a book that I will definitively recommend for people new to Ruby and who want to use it as a scripting language. I wouldn't recommend it for people already familiar to Ruby, unless you want to read about how Brian designs his scripts. Because of that, 4 stars. Good book!

best ruby intro book/tutorial so far

This is my first amazon review, but I have to give this book props. I just started to learn programming 6 months ago, and have now been through a lot of tutorials (why's poignant guide, chris pine's tutorial, the pickaxe book, and others). This book is at the top of my list. It has the best explanation of object oriented programming in ruby, and is an excellent book for beginners. Many of my friends are asking me how to learn programming, and I will tell them to begin with this.

Obedience in Finances

Obedience in Finances was a great quick read about how to trust God with your finances. It was full of scripture on the subject. Kenneth Hagin is always the go to man on building your faith in God for any area of your life and this book was the same. It calls you to go deeper with God by releasing any fear/bondage that have built walls against your faith in this area.
I will pass it on to a friend after reading it a second time. This is a small book that would be good to stick into a gift for a new Christian.

About the Author

R. I. (Bob) Tricker, Former Professor of Finance, Hong Kong University. Honorary Professor Hong Kong Baptist University and Hong Kong Open University.

Dr. R. I. (Bob) Tricker was a chartered accountant, an officer in the Royal Navy, and financial controller of an industrial company, before studying at the Harvard Business School and becoming a Research Fellow at Oxford University. He was Professor of Management Information Systems at Warwick University, then Director of the Oxford Centre for Management Studies (now the Said Business School), before being appointed Professor of Finance at the University of Hong Kong. His books include The Independent Director (1978), Corporate Governance (1984) the first book with that title, and The Economist Essential Director (5th edition 2003). He currently holds honorary professorships of two Hong Kong Universities.
