About the Author
Lynn R. Marotz, R.N., professor emerita, was a member of the Department of Applied Behavioral Science faculty, University of Kansas, for over thirty-five years and also served as the Associate Director of the Child Development Center. She taught large undergraduate and graduate courses in parenting, children's health, safety and nutrition, history and philosophy of early childhood education, and leadership and administration. She worked closely with students in the Early Childhood teacher education program and the families of children enrolled in the Child Development Center. Professor Marotz has authored numerous invited book chapters in national and international publications about children's health and nutrition, legal issues, and environmental safety. She is also the author of HEALTH, SAFETY, AND NUTRITION FOR THE YOUNG CHILD, DEVELOPMENTAL PROFILES: BIRTH THROUGH ADOLESCENCE, MOTIVATIONAL LEADERSHIP, and BY THE AGES: BEHAVIOR AND DEVELOPMENT OF CHILDREN PRE-BIRTH THROUGH EIGHT. She has been interviewed for numerous articles about children's health and nutrition and parenting that have appeared in national trade magazines, has served as a consultant for children's museums and training film productions, has presented extensively at international, national, and state conferences, and continues to hold appointments on national, state, and local committees and initiatives that advocate on behalf of children and their families.

About the Author
Dr. C. Edward Lan has authored two books on airplane aerodynamics and airplane performance. He is the author of more than 100 papers on these topics and the co-author of Airplane Aerodynamics and Performance. He retired as the Warren S. Bellows Distinguished Professor of Aerospace Engineering at The University of Kansas, where he taught airplane aerodynamics and performance, computational fluid dynamics, helicopter aerodynamics, aero elasticity and advanced aerodynamics courses. Dr. Jan Roskam has authored ten books on airplane flight dynamics and airplane design. He co-authored Airplane Aerodynamics and Performance with Dr. CT. Lan. He has written more than 160 papers on these topics and authored the popular Roskam's War Stories. He has actively participated in more than 36 major airplane programs. He retired as Ackers Distinguished Professor of Aerospace Engineering at The University of Kansas (KU) in 2003, where he taught airplane design, stability and control. Dr. Roskam retired as President of DARcorporation (Design, Analysis and Research Corporation) in 2004. He currently serves as an active consultant for DARcorporation, which develops and markets airplane design and analysis software, and is a successful private and government consulting firm.

A concise and thorough compendium of a lot of aeronautical information that seems to be hard to find in one place. Definitely old school, with formulae type-set on a typewriter and some hand-drawn graphs, but math is math.

Wealth of well presented information

An encyclopedic book on airplane aerodynamics and performance presenting all aspects of this vast field in a good organized and accesible manner. The diagrams and pictures have a more coloquial quality, but they are in general very instructive and at times lively as they present data, aspects or facts about planes that have made aviation history. It is not a book for every one, and specially not for the reader expecting to get in short an overview of airplanes design or analysis. It is excellent for the student that higher values a technical than a scientific approach to aerodynamics. The book presents not only equations, it presents a wealth of data on values, parameters, technical solutions, realized on existing airplanes. You end reading each chapter with a good understanding of the concepts AND an overview of the numbers you can expect when realising technical solutions.

Confusing diagrams, odd formula derivations with insufficient explanation as to what's important and what is not. There are many minor typographical errors, though those do little more than annoy. I have struggled for hours trying to glean some meaning from this book and am bewildered at the authors' methods and content organization. This book is almost incomprehensible, and is only useful (sometimes) for its exhaustive breakdowns of concepts. This book throws every bit of everything at you with no regard to helping you understand aircraft performance or design.

This is a thorough handbook covering pertinent information in gynecology and obstetrics that is designed to be carried in the pocket and to point-of-care settings. The purpose is to provide a quick and easily accessible manual for obstetrics and gynecology issues. It is not designed for directed reading, although many chapters do a very thorough job of covering the material. The online format is nice and I appreciate that it is linked to Inkling, although the code redemption required using a different site. The intended audience is medical students and residents, although other care providers may appreciate the book. It is unique in that it depends on a lot of residents for input, which is a nice feature as it allows input from those who would benefit the most. The other authors are all credible authorities. This is a handy pocket book for the field. It is designed to be used in a triage setting or for quick location of information. Chapters such as the one on alloimmunization and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy give a concise description of the pathophysiology followed by clinical management. In fact, all chapters are heavily geared toward clinical management. More flow charts would be appreciated. The treatment section for UTIs and STIs are well done and the easy access to medication doses is appreciated. This book functions as a more comprehensive version of the "red book" -- a pocket book designed for quick 5-minute digestions. This is a simple, straightforward, and well done pocket reference. The online features are nice and this will serve medical students well during their introduction to the field.

DEV TO THE RESCUE!

You will laugh out loud as Dev Haskell, P.I. is thwarted in the most hilarious of ways as he tries to score. The lengths he will go protect the damsel who doesn't know she is in distress will make you appreciate his tenacity. Morton, the golden retriever is back...and in fine form and the villian in this newest Mike Faricy book is the master con man. Women, never fear! Dev is on the way!

Another Mike Faricy winner. I have read and enjoyed all of the Dev Haskill romps and I was especially pleased to see his buddy Morton is back. Anyone who has owned a big, happy dog can't help laughing out loud. I also love Louie. I don't know what Mike thinks he looks like, but I picture Danny deVito.

I've read a lot of Dev Haskell tales and have always found them entertaining. Dev is always the same, always interested in new women (who seem to get him into trouble most of the time), and every story has pretty much the same characters and a lot of drinking. He is always finding himself being accused of murder but always finding a way to get out of trouble.

Mike Faricy's Dev seems to me to be the male's favorite, much like Janet Evanovitch's Stephanie can be preferred by women. Both have sort of a standard script but different adventures. Both have a lot of humor.

In this story Dev's "friend with benefits" Heidi is smitten with a man who Dev finds out is a scam artist. She is so smitten that he can't easily convince her of his three ex-wives, that he is in debt, that he is not an ex-Seal. His task is to accumulate enough evidence that she does not decide to marry this guy.

Word-lovers hunger for facts About Language. In books like this, however, they are served lexical junk-food. Beguiled reviewers take M Jacot's words as his own. He copies from dictionaries, so he can blame them. His count of Albanian words for eyebrow and mustache sounds like the story of all those Eskimo words for snow. Some refinement of the data is in order.

Smoking and Whiffling. M Jacot makes a confused gloss on "smoking":
"In feudal times, drink actually meant to "smoke tobacco." Feudal Europe -- from A.D. 800 to the 1400s -- I needn't tell you, knew not tobacco. The first Americans indeed spoke of "drinking" tobacco. But in their sauna or sweat-lodge Bronze Age and earlier Eurasians, too, sucked up fumes from plants such as cannabis. After 1492 the Spanish took up the tobacco pipe from, of course, the American Indians. From Spain Muslims took up the habit and translated the words into Arabic. So, during Ramadan the cops in Cairo will bust you if they catch you smoking tobacco (too) before sundown, since in the fasting month the Koran proscribes day-time eating or "drinking" The same Arabic verb serves for orally inhaling fluids or fumes.

WHIFFLER. Swaggerers were dubbed whifflers. Even the august Oxford English Dictionary makes a mess of things sometimes. Taking whiffler as "one who whiffles" is an inversion of history. The old nouns in -er are not from verbs but from nouns. The noun here is "whiffle". In Old English a "wifel" (pronounced wiffle) is an ax; in Middle English it's written wyfle. Whifflers were ceremonial bearers of whiffles - axes. On Google see the resplendent Swiss Guards or London Tower Beefeaters with their glinting halberds. Imposing ax-toters cut a fine figure in court processions. The same word in German is "Weibel"; for a sergeant-at-arms; "Feldwebel" is a corporal in the army.

What whiffling meant in England George Borrow tells us in 1857 in "Romany Rye":
"Nobody can use his fists without being taught the use of them, ... no more than any one can `whiffle' without being taught by a master of the art... The last of the whifflers hanged himself about a fortnight ago ... there being no demand for whiffling since the discontinuation of Guildhall banquets; ... let any one take up the old chap's sword and try to whiffle."-- The sorry whiffler, before his art went out of fashion, was a flashy performer with blades.

Did whiffling also mean "smoking"? As guests were departing after a fine Christmas dinner many years ago, a kid I knew cried bitterly disappointed to his mother: "You said we were having company for Christmas. You cooked turkey." The OED editor of the entry WHIFFLE duplicated the boy's logic when he defined whiffling as smoking. OED's glossar was thrown into confusion like the kid with his turkey when Horace Smith in "Tin Trumpet" (1869) compared feeble little volcanoes to mighty Aetna and Vesuvius. The point of comparison in Smith's metaphor was not the smoke-belching of the eruption, but the awe, or lack of it. To stogie-puffing pettifoggers a cigar is not just a cigar.

The Wonder of Whiffling

Highly amusing book, delivered promptly to Australia sooner than promised.

One small issue was that, while the book is clearly new, the cover is slightly marked--probably bruised during shipping--and the person receiving it as a gift may think it is second-hand.
