A contradiction that raises the question: How true is the story?

Recently I watched a DVD of the movie Catch Me If You Can, which was accompanied by a 2nd DVD of bonus features. The bonus features (c2003) included an interview with Frank Abagnale ("Frank Abagnale: Between Reality and Fiction">"Meet Frank Abagnale"). In the interview, Abagnale states, "The judge said my parents were getting a divorce and I had to tell the court which parent I wanted to live with....I got very upset and started to cry, so I turned around and ran out of the courtroom, and the judge called for a ten minute recess, and by the time my parents got outside I was gone. So my mother never saw me again for about seven years. My father, unfortunately, never saw me again, ever."
I found the movie very enjoyable, and decided to buy the book (c1980). I wanted to read the true story upon which the film was based. (On the cover of my copy of the book are the words "The true story of a real fake.") Having seen the interview I just described, I was shocked to read the following on page 8: "When Mom finally divorced my father, I elected to live with Dad. Mom wasn't too keen on my decision, but I felt Dad needed one of us, that he shouldn't have to live alone, and I persuaded her." Abagnale goes on to describe experiences related to living with (and conning) his father after the divorce.
While the book is very interesting, this glaring contradiction leaves me uncertain as to what is true about Abagnale's story and what is made up.

Can the movie be better than the book?

You have probably heard of the movie directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks. I remember seeing the movie. I thought it was a fun flick, nothing more or less. The thing that intrigued me the most was that this movie was based on a true story. It seemed impossible. How could a young man con so many intelligent people for so many years? It seemed too unreal, like something made up by Hollywood.
My curiosity got the best of me and I bought the autobiographical book by Frank Abagnale, Jr.
The book Catch Me If You Can goes into much more detail on Mr. Abagnale’s adventures than the movie. It is amazing how far a nice smile and a bit of confidence can take someone. He explains how we first conned his own Father – a man he admires deeply – which started his scamming lifestyle. He posed as pilot, professor, doctor, lawyer and what not. Though Abagnale admits he never loved school and disliked the idea of honest job, he spends countless hours preparing for his next scam. It is amazing how somebody with so much innate talent will only use it in such a dishonest way.
If you loved the movie you will like this book. After a while, you get a little tired of him explaining each con in detail as they are all similar. At the beginning of the book I saw Abagnale as a messed up kid just trying to make his way, but by the end I found him a tad repulsive. He continually tries to justify his illegal actions by establishing disclaimers like never cheating individuals just the companies.

Excellent read on Kindle. The Catch Me If You Can movie is also excellent.
I've attended several conferences with Frank Abagnale as the featured speaker. Run, don't walk, if you ever get the chance to see/hear him live. You'll hear much more detail and facts from him then were included in the book or movie. He's a classic "a man, a microphone and a story" speaker with a photographic memory and a lifetime of twists and turns that will leave you spellbound. Also highly recommended are his YouTube videos (in youtube.com, Frank Abagnale.
