Best of the Intruder books!
By T. Uryga
I just received this book last week and I'm so glad I bought it.
Without a doubt, this is the most comprehensive, accurate and memory-jogging book on the Intruder and all of its variants.
Not only does it tell you more than you'll ever know about the jet, (unless you were one of the fortunate Pilots or B/N's who flew it over the years), but it contains narrative from the people who were actually there right from the start, in Vietnam, Lebanon, Libya, the Gulf War, and every action right up to the end.
If you were around the squadrons, you'll recognize tons of names from the past, far too many who we've lost, and many more who the authors spent considerable time with as they developed the book.
Funniest part for me is one of the authors actually called me several years ago, saying he was "writing a book on the A6". I talked with him for quite a while, figuring..."sure...writing a book...it will never happen...". Stupid me...the book has only been out 7 YEARS and I never made the connection. The Morgan's really created a masterpiece!
My 11-year-old daughter even noticed that I was quoted in the book... She started reading and looking at photos and for the first time, has an idea of what I did in my time in the Marine Corps. Mark and Rick, THANK YOU!
Even if the Intruder isn't your favorite jet, the book is worthwhile, as few aircraft in the history of aviation have earned such devotion by their aircrews. This is a jet that was far more capable than its designers ever envisioned, and was rugged enough to bring people home who would have been lost in anything else. The camaraderie and bonding of the aircrews and squadron-mates was something to behold. This is a jet that has been gone from the Fleet for almost 20 years and there is still nothing in the inventory to replace it for its true mission of Medium Attack and Deep Strike.
In summary, this isn't a catalog, like so many aircraft books. This is a tribute to brave men, risking everything for this country, and the magnificent bird that carried them on their missions. Every word is true, and you will have a difficult time putting this book down until the end.

Another outstanding Schiffer product
By David C. Nilsen
Basically if you buy a Schiffer aviation history book, you know you'll be getting solid, HIGHLY DETAILED, operational histories of the subject matter, full of BuNos, MODEXes, deployment dates, and all that stuff you love. This book is no exception, and is a great investment.
It is only marred by the irrelevant Foreword by a retired admiral who talks not one bit about the A-6 Intruder, but just uses it as an excuse to riff on how he hated the 1960s permissive society, Elmo Zumwalt, political running of the Vietnam War, how the USMC is superior to the US Navy because it's not politically correct, etc. The authors really should have disqualified this and asked the old guy to try again (but I imagine that he's a loveable, colorful fellow, and they didn't want to do that to him), that or found a different retired admiral who was actually willing to talk about the plane that the book is about. While it is decent and fair to provide venues for elder warriors to expunge their Vietnam demons, this book was not the best place for it. Because here is the point: the A-6 cannot just be pigeon-holed as a Vietnam aircraft. It was a brilliant, highly-capable Cold War aircraft whose career spanned 1960s-1990s. It is a disservice to the plane and its crews to strand it only in that well-plowed Vietnam posturing.
That said, skip the Foreword and go on to the rest of the book, which is as brilliant as you have every right to expect.

By greg wood
This is the most comprehensive history of the Intruder I have ever seen. I am a former Vietnam era Intruder combat veteran from flight operations duriung 1972 and a retired Naval Reserve Captain.
