About the Author
Caterina Perrone works in the media and information sectors across Europe and Latin America. She holds an MA in Translation Studies and Economics from the University of Mainz (Germany) and an MSc in Globalization and Latin American Development from the Institute of the Studies of the Americas (University of London and London School of Economics). She lived in Chile for two years, where she worked both in the business and the nonprofit sectors, and spent months traveling to the most remote corners of the country.

Short, interesting and good preparation for a visit to Chile

Well I liked this book and recommend it. I read it on the plane on my first trip to Chile. I found this book both interesting and helpful. It is short and covers topics - including what many might consider sensitive ones such as the traditional importance of class to Chilean relationships and the traditional role of "connections" in economic and social life. Since I was on a social and not business trip, I especially liked the descriptions of social and family relationships.

I believe I gained understandings and insights that I would have missed as a new visitor. I was traveling with a Chilean family which was great; we got comfortable and trusting together so I could ask them about some of the things I read in the book and based on their responses, the book is on track and they elaborated on interesting things.

Good effort, but many errors

This is a generally good, if small and flawed, superficial introduction book on Chile.

It contains a number of errors, however, which reflect poor research practices, wishful thinking, and probably some political correctness. In other words, it's unreliable and not to be quoted seriously.

For example, there is a statement on page 32 that after the election of Allende in 1970, that "President Nixon halted all US investment and aid to Chile." This statement is patently false. Even Kissinger's famous memos in 1970 called for "reduction" rather than elimination of US assistance and investments. US investment did decline sharply but was not halted by presidential order, and selective US aid types continued and were even expanded. US AID assistance continued, at a reduced level, every year that Allende was in office. Ironically, even US military aid continued during the Allende administration. Similarly, other statements concerning the post-1973 military administration are nothing more than attempts at (leftist) political correctness, with no historical validity, such as the page 49 allegation that "nightlife came to a halt" during this period (the eventual toque de queda for Santiago was only between the hours of 2 and 5 am before it was abandoned altogether). I had no trouble getting around at night there during the late 1970s.

Many of the other historical observations are carelessly ambiguous, such as the page 57 note that Chile and Argentina were on the "brink of war" in 1978 due to a border dispute in the Patagonia region. Actually, Argentina was preparing to invade Chile and take possession of Chilean islands in the Beagle Channel, which is south of Tierra del Fuego.

Some statements are careless and silly, such as the statement that "Chileans are trustworthy" (absolute rubbish) or the page 14 observation that southern Patagonia is only accessible by air and overland via Argentina, forgetting -- oops --- the large number of tourists who reach the region by ship every year. On the subject of trustworthiness, it would be well for the author to acknowledge that Chile has the second-highest rate of theft-robbery in all of the Western Hemisphere, second only to Argentina.

With a publication date of 2007, many of the practices noted in this book are now fading into the past, or no longer observed by more modern organisations. So the book is both outdated and unreliable.

Despite the errors and ambiguities, this little book does a generally good (and occasionally quite accurate) job of introducing some aspects of Chile on a very superficial level.

History + Culture= a good read

I'm really happy that I purchased this book. I am going to Chile and wanted a book that dove into culture aspects where a traditional travel book doesn't. I also liked that it had a short history section too. Just enough to highlight their history but not enough to put me to sleep.

Excellent, Extremely Brief, Candid Discussion Regarding the Pros & Cons for Amazon Prime Photo. A Must-Read.

For under a buck, this brief discussion does a good job in explaining why, and why not, to utilize Amazon Prime Photos.

Writing in a straightforward, candid manner, the writer declares that it is not a good idea to get Amazon Prime if your only purpose is to take advantage of the free, unlimited photo storage. However, as he goes on to state, if you already are a Prime subscriber, or will make good use of the other services that come free with Prime, the photo storage option is a no-brainer.

He does a good job explaining how to get the free Amazon Prime Photos app on a PC or a tablet running either iOS or Android. However, although he mentions there is an app for Apple Mac computers, he makes no other mention of it. Possibly, it runs identically to the PC or iOS versions, but he does not say.

As I am writing this while away from home, using a PC, I cannot verify if there is an app for Mac or if it runs similarly. I will update this review once I can check and test the app at home.

Aside from the above point, what is not fully clear to me from reading this booklet, is if when I use auto-save to upload my pics and videos to Amazon Prime Photos cloud, do the originals stay on my device, or is the cloud merely a backup? I hope the authors will comment to this review to indicate their experience.

Otherwise, this is a terrific booklet that addresses most of my questions regarding a free service that I have not yet availed myself to use because of my fears of being dependent upon the Cloud for viewing my pics.

What I mean is, is this: I opted for cloud storage with Apple for all my music. It was nice that I freed up a goodly chunk of memory on my iPad and iPhone, but, here in on the prairie we have many areas absent of ATT coverage. Not as many as Sprint or T-Mobile, but too dang many nevertheless. So, while driving I frequently am unable to listen to Guthrie, Seeger, Springsteen and Marsalis, all of whom I find great comfort. I am afraid to lose immediate access to my photo albums, so, before I opt in to Amazon's Prime Photo Cloud, I need to know definitively what is my risk.

Okay, But for Beginners...

If you are a complete novice, this might be okay but for most of us, it wasn't super useful. I bought it by mistake but it wasn't worth a fuss to return. If you know nothing about working with photo programs, you might want to read this but if you have ever used Photobucket, or Picasa, not sure this will be particularly helpful.

I teach first grade. This book was perfect for teaching the importance of honesty. After I have read the book to my students, its one of the class favorites. Additionally, it's so easy to reference and reinforce the idea throughout the year.

About the Author
Thelma Harms, Director of Curriculum Development, FPG Child Development Institute, and Research Professor, UNC-CH School of Education, is recognized internationally for her work on creating high quality early childhood environments and assessing educational settings. For 15 years she served as Head Teacher at the Harold E. Jones Child Study Center, UC Berkeley. She has developed a variety of curriculum materials and staff training resources. Much of her recent training and consultation has focused on the use of the scales in technical assistance, and on helping government agencies to develop accountable systems for recognizing and rewarding high quality programs.

Debby Cryer, Scientist, FPG Child Development Institute, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has taught in and directed a variety of early childhood programs. She has written about early childhood program quality for more than 20 years. She is the lead author of the Active Learning Series curriculum books and has extensive experience assessing early childhood programs in varied settings. She is currently studying the effects of continuity of caregiver on childrenÂ’s development, and directs various projects that provide guidance in assessing and improving child care quality.

Richard M. Clifford, Senior Scientist, FPG Child Development Institute Research Associate Professor,UNC-CH School of Education, has written and consulted extensively on child and family policy issues with special emphasis on the role of government in the provision of early childhood services. In addition, he has done research on early learning environments and their impact on young children. He currently is co-director of both the National Center for Early Development and Learning and the National Prekindergarden Center. Dr. Clifford is a past president of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

Great textbook to rate daycare centers.

I recommend this textbook not only for anyone in the field of child development but also to parents using it as a guide to look for in a quality daycare such as teachers, toys, playgrounds, and etc. The book for example ask the rater set of questions and rate it from 1 to 10, "Does the daycare centers have pictures of children drawing on the wall." or "Is there any television inside the center" or "Does the teacher give eye contact with children." Afterward, there is a scale to determine if it is a quality daycare. I wish I knew about this textbook earlier. I also recommend this to those that are opening a daycare as well.

This is hardly a book. More like a little guide you can find in about 5 mins of searching on Google. Very disappointed! I read it in about 8mins! Now I'm returning it and looking for an actual book! It claims to be 54 pages. More like 20 by the time you factor in the huge font used and photos. If this was $3 it would be decent, but not for $10.

Worthless doesn't go low enough to describe my dismay at this book-let! Ok so it's 52 pages, no more like 20 pages after you realize the larger than normal font, the double and triple spacing between one and two sentence paragraphs, and the odd placement of photographs chews up a lot of space. Information is a muddling rehash of stuff found on the internet and presented in a confusing manner. Watch two or three 10 minute videos on blacksmithing on YouTube and you'll know more and have saved the cost of this book plus shipping! I'd send the book back but it's not worth my time to do so!

It Should Be Called "How to Setup a Blacksmith Shop"

This is a very short and straight-forward book. I thought it would cover more things like techniques and projects, but it only explains the very basics of setting up a blacksmith shop on a budget and its pros and cons. You can get the same information from the internet. I would only recommend this to someone who really wants a book in person.
