The Fallen, by Robert Don Hughes

Dr. Jack Brenner, academic, pastor and loving husband, was convinced he’d been abducted by aliens. Now, an encounter from his past is coming back to haunt him.

The beings he encountered certainly looked alien enough. What starts out for Brenner as a lucid dream soon turns to a gruesome nightmare, as he learns from extra-terrestrials that forces of evil are brewing below the surface…

No thought is safe from prying minds in this new world order.

When he is offered a place in the Ultrastructure that controls world politics, Jack is both flattered and repulsed. But the more they dragged him back and forth through time, trying desperately to change the outcomes of events, the more convinced he became: these were no more “space aliens” than he was.

Who then — or what — were they?

And what was the secret they would manipulate all time and space to find?

Trapped in time, a spiritual mystery unravels. Jack is battling against what seems to be a demon hierarchy in the midst of biblical history. Is this a supernatural power or is there a conspiracy closer to home?

And most importantly: will he ever be allowed to return home?

The Fallen is a gripping and mind-bending science fiction thriller with a mysterious theological tint.

What if Aliens were demons?
By TOMMY C ELLIS
The notion that any visitors from outerspace that may show up, may be demons is not unique. Many Christians--especially evangelicals--have posited this view for decades. Robert Don Hughes is the first I have seen to take the view and weave it into an entertaining spiritual sci-fi thriller. He gives us time travel, a teen from a truly dysfunctional family, the tension of lost love ones (yes, Dorothy ALWAYS wants to go home!), and some very creative approaches as to how demons operate--sort of like most human governments.

At times the interplay between characters, and the inner musings of the protaganist seem a bit stiff. Nevertheless, this is an intelligent and unique approach to the theory that UFOs are evil supernatural beings.

Bottom-line: This book is well worth the bargain price that used-book vendors are selling it for here. Buy and enjoy--I did.

MUST contemporary "Christian fiction" poorly written?
By Carolyn Emerson
I read this book because it was recommended to me by a friend who promised the writing was better than that in the popular "Left Behind" series by Jerry Jenkins and Tim LaHaye (which I consider very poorly written). I really *wanted* to like "The Fallen," but it was hard to concentrate on the story line (which was a rather interesting concept) because of its author's lack of writing skills. Someone needs to buy Hughes a thesaurus! *Surely* he could some synonyms for "snarl" as a verb. I got so annoyed with the character Ben's words inevitably being followed by "the teenager snarled," or "snarled Ben", etc., etc. He never "replied" or "said" or "answered"....just "snarled." And the ho-hum way that the protaganist's wife dealt with his unexplained disappearance was just ludicrous! I find it very disheartening to see so many other Christians praising these shoddily written books simply because their premise is one the readers happen to agree with. For a look at well written fiction with a Christian perspective, I'd suggest they try some C.S. Lewis. His "The Screwtape Letters" certainly acknowledges that Good and Evil exist and that we are confronted daily with significant choices between the two. Not, perhaps, in as sensational a way as authors like Hughes, LaHaye, Jenkins et al would have us believe. But how can anyone who considers the Bible compelling and interesting enjoy embarrassingly poorly executed novels which claim to be based on scripture? It's amazing...and more than a little frightening.

One crazy ride through time and space make Pastor Jack Brenner question everything he has ever known.
By Fire Dad ^6
The Fallen is a fun read full of twists and turns, it will keep you guessing the whole way. When Jack Brenner, a pastor of a small church has a run in with a young boy that can read his thoughts and the thoughts of everyone else in his church he is amazed and intrigued at the young man's gift, but after giving him a ride home to the house of a known Satanic cult leader the pastor puts up a wall.

Thirty years pass and he has an encounter with extra-terrestrials that challenges everything he ever knew including his faith. Jack doesn't know what to believe when everything has been turned on its head. When the creatures take him on adventures through time he is faced with man-kind's worst. How could a loving God allow this? How could He let his people do this to each other? Could of of this prove the God doesn't exist?

Questions flood his mind as his journey progresses, plagued with conflicting thoughts he struggles between the faith he knows, and the perceived reality the other worldly beings are showing him. Which is the truth? Has everything he has ever believed been built on lies?

This is well written and has some great characters and an intriguing story. I enjoyed this story a lot overall and would recommend it. 4 Stars!

The Best Atlas EVER!!!!!!
By Muhammad
People if you out to learn anatomy, please do not think you can get a All-in-One anatomy atlas that contains EVERYTHING. It is simply not possible because of the depth of the subject.
Anatomy is not simple. One has to "imagine" every anatomical detail in one's brain without actually seeing things in 3-D.
There are a lot of Netter's enthusiasts, but let me assure you that you have to see the art-work and beauty of this atlas. The drawings are PHENOMENAL and you dont get even 20 % quality of pics in those "Look inside this book" options on Thieme website or on Google book reviews and other sites.
The other good thing about this atlas is that gives an "overall" views for various systems eg arterial, venous systems for various systems. This atlas "gets close to the tree, but never loses the sight of the forest". And thats what you need when you are studying anatomy to be a good doctor-Never lose the perspective; Never forget the BIGGER picture.
I already have a Sobotta and I am going to buy the other two in the series (Neck and Internal Organs and General Anatomy and Musculoskeletal System). If I knew about this atlas I probably would have gone for it earlier (I still would have gone for Sobotta since that is a great one too). I have always seen Netter's around and I have never liked it. I think it is overrated and people cant spend on THREE atlas series but guys let me assure you---> this atlas is the REAL deal.
There are some descriptions as well as but that is superficial and still you have to read proper text book (eg Keith L Moore etc).
Another strength is the clinical correlates with regional anatomy which is really helpful for students .
I am planing to do a video review of this atlas comparing it will Sobotta since many people are not aware of these gems but till then!!!!
Best of Luck.

UPDATE OCTOBER 2012:
Two years later, I continue to admire the fantastic artwork of this atlas (I have all three volumes :-).
The drawings are breathtakingly detailed and impressive. Colour scheme is nice and subtle.
While studying neuroanatomy, I tried using illustrations from "Snell's Neuroanatomy", but that was clearly a mistake. Snell's neuroanatomy does have good descriptive text, but its illustrations are horrible (in general). Many drawings are meant to be 3-D but appear to be 2 D or some weird orientation which is neither 3D nor 2D. Net result: you get more confused.
Go to spinal cord's blood supply in Snell's , and then check out the corresponding drawings from Thieme Atlas. This is the best Atlas out there . A little bit of text in this atlas also adds to the enjoyment.
Simply go for this one as FIRST choice.

Simply Amazing!!! The Best Neuro Book I Have Ever Read!!!
By Med Book Guy
I bough this book after I found myself drowning in the first 2 weeks of my neurosciences module during the first year of med school. A friend of mine showed me the copy he had bought after being told to do so by several different physicians who he had told he was in his neuro module in school. I rarely ever post reviews about books because for the most part many are very average, but that is not the case with this book! This book is amazing! I literally do not know how people who don't have this book are even passing neuroscience in medical school! Take my advice, buy this book and never look back - it will be the best decision you ever made when it comes to neuroscience in medical school

so it is difficult to get a good feel of their relations to each other
By christoph theopold
I was looking for a book for neck and facial anatomy, less so neuroanatomy. I don't think there is enough detail, and from my use of the book, the individual systems (blood vessels, nerves, etc.) are presented in isolation, so it is difficult to get a good feel of their relations to each other.
I prefer Netter's Head and Neck Anatomy for Dentistry, it's very detailed and much better for an ENT, Maxfax or Plastic surgeon, rather than a neurosurgeon.

Intriguing look into the life and mind of The Boss, in his own words! How all his marvelous music came to be.
By Tell It Like It Is
If you have ever actually listened to the lyrics of most Springsteen songs (except maybe Waitin’ on a Sunny Day), you know that Bruce Springsteen is a really deep guy. There was a book published 15 years ago called Songs, which contained all the lyrics of every Springsteen song written to that time. I loved that book. I read it cover to cover, several times. You could read and contemplate all his lyrics. Born to Run helps explain the factors that helped Bruce’s amazing catalog of music come into creation.

Bruce’s autobiography, Born to Run, gives his fans tremendous insight into what it was that has driven Bruce over the course of his life and career. The motivations, the demons, the anxiety, the joys, the fears, the hopes, the dreams, all the elements that have constituted the Boss’s muse over these past 50 years are explained here. And not only is Bruce one of the great writers of lyrics and music, he is a great writer of prose. He amply demonstrates this here for all the world to see. He shares his story in a way only he could.

If you intend to purchase and read this book, I will tell you it is a real page turner. I could not put this book down. It has a somewhat imposing profile at 528 pages, but it is an easy read. An inspiring read. I do not want to reveal any of the revelations the reader will discover within the pages of this book, but I can say it was interesting to learn that Bruce possesses many of the same insecurities of us mere mortals.

Bruce discloses, in great detail, particulars of his early years, his upbringing, the issues that influenced the way he thinks, his musically formative years, his wide held acclaim, his family, his doubts, his fears, and a treasure trove of personal details I have never heard before. I have been a Springsteen fan for over four decades. I grew up less than 30 miles from Freehold, NJ. I used to go see Bruce in those little seaside bars he used to sing about. I have seen many Springsteen interviews. I have attended over 60 shows. I have read most of the previously published articles and books. Much of the material in this book has never been publicly presented before, and all in his own words. Bruce has obviously spent much time in intense introspection, and he shares many of his insights and conclusions here.

Bruce is arguably the world’s greatest showman. Now that the great James Brown has passed on, the moniker, “The Hardest Working Man in Show Business,” clearly belongs to Bruce. His unique gifts of lyric writing, musical composition, musicianship, and studio and on stage performance have rarely been seen in a single person. Bruce has won 20 Grammys (out of 49 nominations), 2 Golden Globe Awards, an Academy Award, 2 Emmy Awards, has been inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of Fame, has received a Kennedy Center Honor, and so much more. He now shows himself to be a gifted writer as well. And this book provides tremendous insights into how all that came about.

Bruce’s drive for perfectionism is explained. Why “good enough” is not in his vocabulary. Bruce is keenly aware the music will last forever. Here he is, 67 years old, and still performing to sold out stadiums and arenas every time he plays. His fans love him. He knows that, and he knows why. He strives to produce and deliver the best product he can, and he almost always succeeds.

If you have ever wondered exactly what it is that makes one of the greatest of this or any other generation’s musical talents tick, it is all right here. Bruce’s candor is striking. He has generally been a reserved and very private person in the past, but in this book, he puts it all out there. If you are a fan, you will love this book.

Bruce Springsteen is not just one of the world’s greatest musicians, writers, and performers, he is one of the world’s greatest people. Through a lifetime of events he details here, his skills developed and he has evolved into the national and world treasure affectionately referred to as "The Boss."

Springsteen's Mystery Train
By Gregg Chadwick
Bruce Springsteen's memoir is perhaps the literary equivalent of his four hour concerts. Springsteen's book ranges from his earliest memories to his current inspiration. I am humbled at the craft and honesty in this book. His life story is shaped and nuanced for sure, but it still is stunningly compelling. Springsteen delves into his musical history in quite some depth. His early bands - the Castiles and Steel Mill helped the young Springsteen grow into the leader of the E Street Band. Stories from the road abound. Freehold, Asbury Park, New York City, San Francisco, London, Berlin, Amsterdam, Los Angeles, Memphis, and even Big Sur's Esalen make an appearance. Springsteen also dives into the thoughts behind his most important albums. The tension between the spontaneous nature of his live shows and the crafting of his music into recordings is palpable in the pages of "Born to Run". Springsteen also opens old wounds to shine a light on his family's history of mental illness and his own struggles with depression. This is an important American story that is not to be missed.

As good as "autobiography" gets!!
By BeauneHead
Bruce Springsteen’s “autobiography” is a masterpiece of that genre. It is just that: his life story from his vantage point. The book could have used some good editing (many redundant stories; garbled chronology about events in different chapters; too much rambling didactic stuff, which is not Bruce’s strength, as he is a genuine poet and poetry is about being concise.) But, his voice comes through loud and clear; that’s Bruce.
Yes, he’s political in praising most people in his life. But, ironically, since Bruce always said when he was young and famous in his twenties: “know the art; not the artist,” he lets us “know” the artist and his demons. To his everlasting credit, he is frank about his own and his father’s psychiatric problems (depression and some organic paranoia in his father.) That is a sine qua non of Bruce’s psyche and his poetry (he is, in my view, a poet who has terrific musical and showmanship skills.) Believe me, there was a great gorge between his stage personality and his “real” personality for a real long time, maybe still. But, he now seems more comfortable in his “American skin.”
Bruce is also frank about his own large ego (essential for what he’s accomplished); his autocratic personality vis a vis the E Street Band; and his extremely focused life, at least pre-wife Patti and the kids. He also adores his supportive mother and her contributions to his success; no shame in that. Yes, he leaves out some private stuff (failed romances, etc.) but he includes a boatload of things most people aren’t comfortable talking about: his first marriage; his depression/anxiety; his long, 25-year journey of psychoanalysis; his conflicts with his band members. So, he’s entitled to leave some stuff out.
The one thing that does bother me a bit is how much he trashes his small town in New Jersey (Freehold), yet he is magnetically drawn to be in its geographic and cultural orbit, as he still lives very nearby. He either never “left” or, despite the wisdom, “went home again.” (Having grown up in the same town at the same time, I think he’s a little too hard on the town, per se, when it was no worse than thousands of other small towns in that era: provincial and divided by “sides of the tracks” and race.)
All in all, a very satisfying read; well expressed; not too verbose, if borderline at times. A poet from New Jersey named Bruce once said something like “you spend your childhood creating experiences” and the rest of your life “processing” them. Most of his life is just that, and it’s wonderful to be let in on his thinking and essential humility and humanity. And, it seems that he is a very satisfied soul—despite his struggles and scars-- even if he isn't really the guy on stage that everyone loves.

The Paradox of the "Slave Athletic Celebrity"
By M. JEFFREY MCMAHON
Rhoden's aim in this finely written and very readable screed is to explore the African American star athlete's paradoxical dilemma: On one hand, he is worshipped for his athletic prowess and is lavished with millions of dollars. On the other hand, he is beholden to white team owners, white league administrators, and as such is limited to the role of a super-paid lackey.

Some reviewers object to the slavery analogy and the exodus from the plantation to the Promised Land that is heavily used in Rhoden's argument. But Rhoden is correct to point out that the slavery is both spiritual and power-based. Spiritual because too many African American athletes, Rhoden charges, are so busy micromanaging their careers that they have no sense of the broader context, of African American history (one star athlete was shocked with disbelief when he discovered that blacks were once banned from Major League Baseball). Power-based because too many blacks are relegated to "black" roles and forget the larger mission of making more opportunities for blacks in positions of privilege.

Whether or not you agree with Rhoden's analogy, I would argue that the book is nevertheless very readable and entertaining, giving us powerful narratives of how black men, starting with the emancipated slave fighter Tom Molineaux, left America to fight the English champion Tom Cribb and showed whites that blacks' athletic performance defied stereotypes about being dense, ignorant, maladroit, etc. By studying Molineaux, Ali, and other African American greats, Rhoden shows how black athletes who see themselves as symbols of black power help forge the way for other black athletes.

On a personal note, Rhoden, an African American, explains in his own life growing up in Chigaco in the 1950s and 1960s, that sports are a great avenue for learning about race and American history. I am no exception. As a child, I loved Hank Aaron and one day as I read about the way he was bullied and denied white restaurants and hotels, I got a bitter taste of what this country was like for people of color and contemplated the hideous color divide.

Sports is a powerful metaphorical arena for talking about race and Rhoden has done an exemplary job of developing that metaphor in a book that is always engaging and provocative.

The NBA as a Metaphor for the Plantation? Difference is They Get Paid Millions
By Dera R Williams
Forty Million Dollar Slaves: The Rise, Fall, and Redemption of the Black Athlete

by journalist William C. Rhoden gives a no-holds barred, unadulterated low-down about highly paid black athletes and the juxtaposition of slavery. How did Rhoden come to the conclusion that most Black athletes are highly paid slaves? He starts off methodically detailing the history of African Americans sports dating back to the plantation when slaves were a commodity; property to be used for entertainment as well as labor. Plantation owners would stage fights between slaves from different plantations as weekend amusement. Slaves also became jockeys to plantation owners who owned horses. This became a lucrative business and Black jockeys earned huge payoffs for their owners as well as for themselves on into Reconstruction and into the early 1900s. Blacks dominated horse racing but they were literally squeezed out of the market by greed, jealousy and blatant racism.

Rhoden also details the rise and fall of the Negro Leagues and the tragedy of Arthur "Rube" Foster, who sacrificed everything in the 1930s to organize Black ownership of baseball teams and to give due respect to black baseball players who were unable to play in the major leagues. Ironically, integration saw the end of the Negro Leagues when prime players such as Jackie Robinson and Satchel Paige went to the majors. Rhoden goes on to chronicle the early days of football and basketball. He recounts pioneers in both fields, including Paul Robeson of Rutgers and Raymond Chester of Morgan State and then the Oakland Raiders. It was not until the early 1970s that Southern colleges began recruiting Black football players; at one time the NBA was almost all-white.

Rhoden contends that our young Black athletes, high school, college and professional, lack knowledge of their history in general, and the history of African Americans in sports, in particular. He cites this disconnect for not only the negative, destructive behavior that many of them indulge in but the apathy and lack of political noninvolvement and racial pride. Where are the young Muhammad Alis? But it is the Benjamins that are the prize at the end of the day. Poor inner-city or southern rural Black kids who show exceptional athletic talent become a victim of the "Conveyor Belt." A system, by which they are prepped, coddled and many times exploited at early ages on into high school and college with the main goal to snag the million dollar contracts and lucrative endorsement deals. Who would not want this? But at what cost? Even with all the money Black athletes command, there is still a lacking in coaching, those in top management and almost nil in Black team ownership with the exception of Robert Johnson of the Charlotte Bobcats. Also notable are the few African American sports journalists working to shape and control our image and the lack of exposure to Black agents, attorneys and other specialists to these new multimillionaires.

Kellen Winslow Sr., now an attorney, was a former college football star and played pro for several years and is now in the Hall of Fame. Because he went through the Conveyor Belt, he was able to advocate for his son, Kellen Jr. when the college scouts came courting. He speaks candidly about how college scouts will try to divide the child and parents. He refused to let this happen, often butting heads with his son over where he would go to college. Winslow maintains though that most Black kids do not have a parent, most specifically a father, who will run interference in these matters.

One of the most profound chapters is "The River Jordan: The Dilemma of Neutrality."

Rhoden shows disappointment, hurt, an almost aversion to the beloved Michael Jordan. Jordan's apathy towards Black causes and his neutral stance was a topic of debate when Marcus Book Club met to discuss this book. The members however, came to the agreement that to whom much is given, much is expected and cited Magic Johnson and Dikembe Mutombo as excellent examples of those giving back to their communities. This book is a must-read, especially for young people, both young men and young women and their parents. The history is invaluable and the subject is timely. This is a keeper in one's African American library.

Reassessing the Power of Athletes in Modern America
By Roger D. Launius
Sportswriter William C. Rhoden offers in "Forty Million Dollar Slaves" a fascinating portrait of the modern African American athlete. He finds that they are well compensated, but that they are forced to confirm to a longstanding meme in society, which of white dominance and control versus black subservience and servitude. In his estimation, modern "athletes have ridden the coattails of protest movements, benefiting from the sacrifices of the [Paul] Robesons and [Jackie] Robinsons and Jim Browns and Muhammad Alis, but have been content to be symbolic markers of progress rather than activists in their own right, pushing progress forward. They have been unwilling to rock the boat" (p. 217).

Rhoden finds that athletes are processed, like so many manufactured products, homogenized "to get along, they learn by inference about the benevolent superiority of the [owners] and enter into a tacit agreement to let the system operate without comment." They learn "to accept the power structure as it is. The young, talented athlete learns about the value of cultivating the far-reaching range of range of affiliations, connections, and alliances that can make the athlete's...journey smooth; he also learns about the kinds of associations and ideas that can make it quite miserable or even terminate it altogether" (p. 194). They learn early on to keep their mouths shut, uttering trite clichés and little more. That is one of the reasons why when an athlete articulates sophisticated criticism of the status quo, regardless of the purpose, it is such a delight to journalists and such a threat to owners and others in the power structure.

From the boxing rings of the early twentieth century with such individuals as Jack Johnson through Jesse Owens, Paul Robeson, and Jackie Robinson to the more recent experiences of Arthur Ashe, Mohammed Ali, John Carlos, Tommie Smith, Kellen Winslow, and John Thompson, "Forty Million Dollar Slaves" explores how everything about modern sports is built around an unwritten agreement that in return for unchallenged authority and excellence on the court or field the black athlete receives wealth and fame. Few question the structure of sports and society, and some even revel in it. Rhoden holds up Michael Jordan as the classic example of one who has been celebrated and enriched through this arrangement. When asked about his response to overt racism expressed by a candidate for Congress in 1990, Jordon responded, "Republicans buy sneakers, too" (p. 201). He did not want to jeopardize his deal with Nike. In contrast, those who question this situation set themselves up for marginalization
Rhoden's work is powerful, provocative, and perceptive. His characterization of the state of sports, the place of athletes, and the nature of the business of sports is illuminating. His conclusion that many African American athletes are willing participants in this system is troubling. I recommend "Forty Million Dollar Slaves" as a thought-provoking treatise on a major aspect of sports and society.

Girl, Interrupted, by Susanna Kaysen

In 1967, after a session with a psychiatrist she'd never seen before, eighteen-year-old Susanna Kaysen was put in a taxi and sent to McLean Hospital. She spent most of the next two years in the ward for teenage girls in a psychiatric hospital as renowned for its famous clientele—Sylvia Plath, Robert Lowell, James Taylor, and Ray Charles—as for its progressive methods of treating those who could afford its sanctuary.

Kaysen's memoir encompasses horror and razor-edged perception while providing vivid portraits of her fellow patients and their keepers. It is a brilliant evocation of a "parallel universe" set within the kaleidoscopically shifting landscape of the late sixties. Girl, Interrupted is a clear-sighted, unflinching document that gives lasting and specific dimension to our definitions of sane and insane, mental illness and recovery.

Amazon.com Review
When reality got "too dense" for 18-year-old Susanna Kaysen, she was hospitalized. It was 1967, and reality was too dense for many people. But few who are labeled mad and locked up for refusing to stick to an agreed-upon reality possess Kaysen's lucidity in sorting out a maelstrom of contrary perceptions. Her observations about hospital life are deftly rendered; often darkly funny. Her clarity about the complex province of brain and mind, of neuro-chemical activity and something more, make this book of brief essays an exquisite challenge to conventional thinking about what is normal and what is deviant.

From Publishers Weekly
Kaysen's startling account of her two-year stay at a Boston psychiatric hospital 25 years ago was an eight-week PW bestseller.
Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
Kaysen's tell-all memoir received an immense amount of media attention and critical praise. The book became a best seller and has recently been made into a movie. In 1967, after taking 50 aspirins to abort the parts of her that she didn't like, the author for the first time visited a psychiatrist, who immediately called a taxi and hospitalized her. The money that her parents had intended to spend on her college education instead went into paying for a two-year stay at McClean Hospital. Poets Sylvia Plath and Robert Lowell, singers James, Kate, and Livingston Taylor, as well as Ray Charles are among the hospital's renowned clientele or, as they call themselves, "graduates." Kaysen offers good insights on the connections among poetry, music, and madness as well as a vivid account of institution life. She is at her best when gossiping, describing her surroundings, and offering one-liners on her stay at McClean. Unfortunately, her reading is flat and ultimately difficult to listen to. Not a necessary purchase except where demand dictates.DPam Kingsbury, Florence, AL

Cleverly, Beautifully, Even Poetically & Humorously, Written Memoir!
By Spiraling Blue Fire
I just finished reading this book. I started reading it before I went to sleep and could not put it down! I stayed up all night long and into the dawn just to keep reading!!! This book is so beautifully written. At times it is casually poetic. It is an account of one 18 year old young womyn's memoirs of her two year stay in a mental hospital in 1967. The author, Susanna Kaysen, offers the reader rich, vivid characters and surroundings laced with humor. Not even once did I find this book sad. I found it funny more often than not, and insightful, pithy and so, so very true! I have spent the evening talking about it with family and friends, begging them to give it a read. Now I'm begging YOU! YOU SIMPLY MUST READ THIS ELOQUENT, FUNNY, CHARMING, WISE BOOK! The insights that are in here are worth hours of pondering. I love the relationships between the young womyn in the ward. She depicts them so well I can see them clearly still in my mind's eye, sitting on yellow vinyl chairs, folding paper flowers ~ Lisa cutting to the heart of any going's on with her twisted humorous, yet uncanny, straight-to-the-heart-of-the-matter insights. This book shows you both the dark and light side of living in a mental institution... and all the questions about culture and existence in between.

Loved this book and can't wait to start reading it again! Even more intriguing than the film... and much more insightful.

Enjoy...
By Tabitha B.
The book is written as an easy and followable dialect. It is important to remember that this is essentially a personal account by the author and not intended to be a full out fictional tale. Several people I loaned the book to couldn't seem to grasp the angle for which the narrator was coming from. I had seen the movie, however many many moons ago, but the story seemed to remind me of many parts of the film. I would say this is a compliment on the movie for sticking to the script of the book. The book itself isn't very long, so it is definitely a fast read.

A little jumbled
By RevSVJ
I was super excited to read this book because of its high critical acclaim but as it turns out its not written very well. The first 2/3rds of the book could be combined into one chapter and there is a lot of over lap, repeated information and run on sentences. The meat and potatoes starts 2/3rds of the way into the book with the chapter called "Borderline Personality Disorder." Finally the writer makes a point but then looses the audience by admitted shes an elitist who doesn't really care for going to college, learning new things or even taking self inventory for the reason why she tired to commit suicide. Rather she just laughs off the whole idea as something any young adult would do and then spends her time complaining about being admitted to the hospital. She has some great criticisms about hospitals but then looses the reader when she makes it all about herself and why she's better than any treatment or the need for any help. Not sure why this book is so popular but the movie was great. Sadly the movie is NOTHING like the book in every way.
