Osito Paddington en español

This is an excellent book and Paddington is a lovable bear. This particular translation into Spanish is slightly questionable at times - where on occasion it feels as though the interpretation was very literal - but it's not so jarring as to take away from the overall charm of the book. It gets the message across to Spanish-speaking readers well enough, with a few pauses along the way to figure out what a certain expression or word means in Spain that is not used in Latin America. I will continue to search for other translations, but overall, this is a nice interpretation that tells the story. I would recommend it to be read to children of 6 years and up.

Lovely...inside and out.

We love this book and Paddington's occurrences that we just had to have it in our collection. Both my boys (4 & 10) ask me to read it to them all the time. The translation uses a Spanish used in Spain... Being from Latin America, we quickly noted the difference but, it is Spanish nevertheless. We love it and wished there were more of Paddington's books in Spanish.

Valuable Resource

I bought this book as I prepared for the PE exam. I used it to prepare for the California special seismic examination.

The book is five distinct parts, detailing the process for designing all the major material types with respect to seismic forces. The authors did an excellent job of detailing each step in the process- but without repeating what has been covered in a previous example process. This makes the book a little more condensed, and, imho, a better reference.

It helped me A LOT in learning the seismic design process. However, it has been even more valuable after the exam. I have used this book while designing masonry commercial buildings, and while improving my own seismic design procedures.

If you are a California engineer, this book is recommended. If you are from an area where seismic forces rarely control design, and need a great reference to get you up to speed, this is highly recommended.

If you're heading for the PE exam, I recommend: the CERM (current edition), Pass the PE like a Pro ebook, and the relevant NCEES practice exam book.

Hyper-detailed instructions—with full color, easy-to-read and understand illustrations—help budding enthusiasts navigate EV3 Kits with clear language and step-by-step directions. Readers learn the basics of assembling a simple robot before being introduced to various programming tricks to be used on the EV3 Brick, the colloquial term for the Mindstorms mini-computer. Be forewarned that in order to take full advantage of the programming functionality of the kit, including the ablity to create and edit programs, users must have a computer to connected to their EV3 Brick (though basic programming on the EV3 Brick can be done without one). Each chapter contains several short challenges, dubbed "discoveries," which are cleverly accompanied by a legend: whimsical gear wheels represent the estimated amount of building time; tiny Microsoft Windows-esque blocks show the expected level of programming expertise; and a small clock estimates the length of time it should take to solve the challenge. Later chapters describe building intricate robots with fun objectives: a racing robot, ANTY (a robotic ant), and the SNATCH3R (complete with a robotic arm that grabs). Readers who are intimidated by the discoveries can skip these and instead focus on the building projects and the programming tricks that do not involve the use of a computer. Perfect intro to Lego robotics

I got the EV3 for my 7 year old son as soon as it came out. By accident, we ended up with the educational version. The instructions provided were not clear enough to get us easily up and running. I started buying other EV3 books. They generally assumed that one had done Mindstorms previously. I just did not have time to help my son figure the thing out, and it sat in a box for months.

Then this book arrived. We are up and running, and my son is engrossed and so am I. The author gives terrific detail, and has small projects scattered through each chapter to help develop understanding of each of the features. We work through a few pages each evening, and do one or two projects (e.g., program the EV3 to do a figure 8). These projects are perfect.

As to the educational version vs the home version..... I splurged and got the expansion set. It turns out that this just has a lot of Technics-type structural pieces. It does not have new motors or sensors. The educational packs has all of the motors and sensors of the home version with two exceptions: the remote control sensor and related beacon. I got those thru the lego site. There may be a few add'l pieces that we'll need in the future to build all of the projects in this book, but we are 1/4 the way thru and haven't found them.

I'd also refer you to the book's website, which has a lot of useful information. The author has also kindly responded to specific questions (relating to education vs home versions), and has been quite helpful. So...can't recommend this more enough. I recommend it to all home users as well as school clubs.

Great book for EV3 and programming!

This is a great book. We have only begun, but it is already fantastic. It is not only information, but it is also a tutorial. The book includes 132 practice modules spread throughout the chapters which allow for an iterative process of learning. Additionally, the book contains 30 design modules that allow you to learn building techniques. My two sons and I (ages 9 and 11) are separately going through the book and practice/design modules with each of us tracking our progress on a tracking sheet. We do the modules individually and then collaborate to see how each of us is accomplishing the task. It's great, but it does still require you to think ahead and be organized. Just by completing a module, you don't necessarily become an expert on that topic. You will find that you will still need to play around with the features to better understand how they work. The first module that will test your understanding of previously introduced capability is Discovery Module #8 which tells you to have your EV3 make a figure 8. I was able to do it with four blocks (in the downloaded EV3 programming software from Lego).
Great book for learning how to use your EV3 and for learning how to program.

Not interesting to my sports & art focused 10 year old

We bought this as a Christmas present for our 10 tear old grandson, having bought the Mindstorms EV3 robotic kit the year before. (https://www.amazon.com/LEGO-6029291-Mindstorms-EV3-31313/dp/B00CWER3XY/ref=pd_bxgy_14_img_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=MC1JTP8QH6VEFWKKD024) He never was interested in the kit; we thought this book would peak his interest. It didn't.

They looked fascinating to me, but his interests just don't go that way. Maybe when he is older.

Beth Henley is a screenwriter, actress and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, most famous for her play Crimes of the Heart. Henley has written several screenplays including the Academy Award nominated film version of Crimes of the Heart, with Diane Keaton, Jessica Lange, Sissy Spacek, and Sam Shepard; Miss Firecracker with Holly Hunter (who has also starred in six of her stage plays) and Tim Robbins; Nobody's Fool with Rosanna Arquette and Eric Roberts.

unromanticized Old West

Those who know Beth Henley from her play (and the subsequent movie) Crimes of the Heart will get something darker with her play Abundance, set in the Old West. I listened to the dramatized version by L.A. Theatre Works, starring JoBeth William as Macon Hill Curtis and Amy Madigan as Bess Johnson Flann.

Two mail-order brides head to Wyoming in the 1860s, and both discover that their new lives aren’t what they were expected. You won’t get any of romanticization as in Sarah, Plain and Tall, but you’ll enjoy a tale — marked with equal parts humor, pathos, and grit — of two women trying to make the best of their situations and their relationship over the ensuing 25 years.

Another Henley

All I can say is congratulations to Beth Henley! Henley won a Pulitzer for "Crimes of the Heart" which I have read and seen performed. I was underwhelmed by both experiences. As an audience member who has seen my share of theatrical performances, "Abundance" does not have near the staying power of "Crimes of the Heart". I very much appreciate southern writers, female southern writers in particular. Perhaps Henley is over my head and I just don't get it. If that is the case, I say touche'.

Surprisingly useful

I bought this book for my capstone senior design project. Contains some surprisingly useful information. I used it mainly for the economic analysis of my project. Having never done anything related to economics before, it was a very useful tool and helped me produce a high quality senior design project.
