About the Author
PAUL-ALAN JOHNSON, PhD, is Senior Lecturer and Director of Theory in the School of Architecture at the University of New South Wales, Australia. He is a chartered architect and a leading authority on Australian public housing and dwelling design. Dr. Johnson is also a consultant on architectural history, design, and aesthetics to government departments and environmental groups. He is internationally known for his work in geometry and symbolism in colonial town planning.

Undone by his own scholarship

This work has 120 sub-chapter-sized chunks on all manner of topics concerning architectural theory. Think of them as 120 bite-size essays. Snuggle into bed, drop a sleeping pill into your cup of cocoa, and while you sip your velvety chocolate goodness you can easily read an essay before falling into the embrace of Morpheus.

What you will gain from that exercise, I am not entirely sure. Mr Johnson has gone to an enormous amount of effort to explore pretty much everything that might come under the rubric of a "theory of architecture". The book is well worth reading for that effort alone, as it at least gives a framework for thinking, and it is certainly a must read for any postgrad at an American Ivy League architecture school looking for source material.

But Mr Johnson's scholarship and work undoes him in the end. In his lengthy-- and very well organised book-- he shows that there is no such thing as a "theory of architecture"; that is all just a cobbled-together mess, drawing bits from here, bits from there. His very chapter organisation demonstrates that.

That the discipline of architecture has utterly failed to construct any coherent theories is no fault of Mr Johnson. That Mr Johnson has failed to realise that, is his own fault.

Johnson's exploration of the theory of western architecture is meticulously organized and incredibly concise. Drawing from a wide collection of sources, "The Theory of Architecture" is a perfect beginning to understanding the paradigms that have shaped western architectural heritage--this book does not pretend to be something it is not. It is an honest, functional, and explicit work that should not be overlooked.

Excellent Resource Book for Beauty Jouralists

As a beauty writer, I consider this book my new bible. Each cosmeceutical ingredient has its own entry and each entry is packed with useful information and references. Entry sections include: source, history, chemistry, oral uses, topical uses, safety issues, environmental impact, formulation considerations, usage considerations, background and more. The writing is clear and comprehensive and the book is very well organized, making it easy for me to find the info I need--and fast.

A Must Have for Anyone Seriouly Interested in Skin Care

This book about cosmetic ingredients should benefit anyone with a serious interest in skin care, including dermatologists, cosmetic chemists, aestheticians and keen lay people. The author discusses the research on many ingredients, including some of the most commonly recognized, such as the retinoids, vitamins C and E, aloe, resveratrol (a red wine component), petrolatum, silicones and honey. The text, although unique, is easily understood, and by separating fact from fiction allows insight into cosmeceutical claims. The author's straightforward and unbiased approach toward skin care makes this an excellent reference text. The well-placed overviews, such as those on pigmentation, aging and acne, combined with chapters on, for example, skin structure and cosmetic labeling, lift this text beyond its encyclopedic nature.

Nevertheless I like the book and it does indeed give useful information ...

The information in the book is rather undetailed. It does, however, cover most of the standard ingredients and gives much interesting stuff to read. In my point of view books in this price category should be a bit thicker than 400 pages; other scientific books I use for my studies are three to five times as thick. Nevertheless I like the book and it does indeed give useful information about cosmetics in general.

Very Pop-Science

I had never read Louv before; only read of him. And I always seemed to agree with his diagnoses of modern people, especially children: too little nature, too little unstructured time. I bought this book with the hope of it addressing that problem in a social, or at least personal way: what are we going to do about all this? And the introduction was promising.

Sadly, only a few sections resemble that introduction: the chapters dealing with Louv's family and personal experiences are well written and have some real force behind them. But they're only short intermissions between pages and pages of enumeration. The bulk of this book is a catalog of recent scientific experiments, most of which "hint" or "suggest" that nature is good for us in one way or another. The formula is for Louv to tell us about a scientist or institution, describe them, then describe their experiment, then meekly repeat its tentative results. Now science is supposed to be tentative, but I kept thinking (even as someone who fully believes nature is important), "That's it? That's your evidence?" The problem is, I think, the whole approach: Louv likes nature, and he's convinced that only a barrage of science will be adequate for convincing anyone else. I'm trained as a scientist, and yet I don't believe that: maybe we can just, yunno, like nature, and think it's important. Instead Louv falls into a sort of science fetish, especially around new whiz-bang apparatus like neuro-imaging (your thoughts are only valid if we can see what part of your brain "lights up" when you think them). It's all very breathless, with no end of goofy coined phrases -- like a less clever Malcolm Gladwell (who is himself not all that clever).

I don't disagree with Louv in the least. And if you want an armory of studies to throw at other people, this will certainly familiarize you with what's out there. But do I really want to value nature because "vitamin N" might improve my test performance 2%, or increase my seratonin levels? This line of thinking misses the point. And in fact, it falls into just the trap that harms nature the most: quantifying its specific functionality to us, and not actually seeing anything inherently worthwhile in it.

Fantastic book on the importance of bringing nature home

Now having read an advanced copy of Louv's new book The Nature Principle, I am moved by his case for bringing nature into our urban centers. Louv is correct that adults need nature too...we need it to weave our affinity for nature together with our day-to-day surroundings. This book is the best overall summary of many different works, and does exceptionally well at revealing the growing body of research around the influence of nature on human health. His findings suggest that a lack of `nature nearby' may be associated with an epidemic of obesity and diabetes, asthma, behavior disorders, depression and a diminished sense of place and community. However, as Louv conveys in his book, he is optimistic the trend can be reversed if we bring nature back into our backyards, neighborhoods, and schools. This book is not simply to be read in passing, but incorporated into our daily experience of life.

The Nature Principle

I wholeheartedly recommend this book to every human who has a body, mind and spirit! The Nature Principle is so informative and inspiring. Not only are the authors observations and concerns explored in an easily accessible manner, but they also provoke thoughtful consideration and suggest reasonable action. I had intended to read this book outdoors, but found myself moving inside to my reading lamp as the sun went down! It was too compelling to put down as night fell!

A movie based on this book would be awesome! ¡Una pelicula basada en este libro seria tremenda!

"Guerra Contra Todos Los Puertorriqueños" tocó mi corazón y me conmovió cuando leí la edición en inglés. Ahora la versión en español me deja sin palabras porque si en inglés es impactante, en mi propio idioma lo es mucho más. Fascina la humanización de la figura de Don Pedro Albizu Campos.

Aunque ya conocía muchos de los hechos, la pasión conque Nelson Denis narra los sucesos le da a este libro una frescura y dinamismo que no había encontrado en ningún otro libro sobre el tema. El libro te agarra y no te suelta. Te transporta en tiempo y lugar, arrojando luz y brindando un entendimiento especial a hechos vividos. Y mientras el telón se va levantando para revelar lo nuevo, lo ya conocido parece nuevo también, debido al estilo y una perspectiva de autor nueva y refrescante.

La información que Denis incluye en el libro, obtenida a través de los documentos desclasificados, no tiene precio.

Yo viví parte de esa historia. Recuerdo, de niña, la ley de la Mordaza, y vivo siempre consciente de los estragos y sufrimientos que causó, y de cómo nos afecta todavía a todos los puertorriqueños. Viví la persecución contra el independentismo, pues como estudiante universitaria sufrí "carpeteo", persecución, acoso, amenazas, y la fabricación de casos, por ser parte del movimiento pro independencia en Puerto Rico. Me alegra mucho que se haya escrito este libro.

"Guerra Contra Todos Los Puertorriqueños" es un libro honesto y fascinante, que no oculta nada, sobre una parte de la historia de Puerto Rico que hacía tiempo no se tocaba. Un libro necesario en la educación en Puerto Rico, especialmente para la juventud, y que todos los puertorriqueños deben leer. Un libro de gran interés y valor para personas de todas las nacionalidades.

¡Una película basada en este libro sería tremenda!!

Very few books have made me angry. This one's one of them. Now I need to keep reading to learn more about this dark chapter in our island's past.

Regardless of whether you're from Puerto Rico or not, you should read this book. Period.

Not my favorite in the series

I have loved this series from the beginning and when rereading it I found out that there were 4 more books. I one-clicked without reading the blurb and after a few chapters I regretted it. However I needed to know how it ended. Some really messed up things happen between Vince and Maggie that I personally would not be able to overlook but maybe forgive. But after reading the rest of the books I have to say that I'm glad I continued to read them and not give up on this series.

This book is not nearly as good as the previous books in this series. I am hanging in hoping this author can bring back this storyline in keeping with the original story. Right now the main characters look like a bunch of weirdos.

While I adore how Arkadie writes, and I love these characters, this one has a bit more crazy than usual. Always fast paced with a great story line and lots of crazy good sex. Reading in order to get background info will make the reading better. Most Definitely RECOMMENDED.

I will say a lot of the info in here is the same as what he's already learned so I am glad I chose the second grade book rather

My son just finished his first year of 1st grade dual immersion, we speak English at home, I wanted a book to help him not lose the knowledge he's gained over the course of the Summer. I will say a lot of the info in here is the same as what he's already learned so I am glad I chose the second grade book rather than the 1st grade book. This book is a lot thinner than what I was hoping for, I feel the price should only be $2 or $3 rather than close to $5, however I also know in general the bilingual materials seem to cost more period. For example, I bought bilingual books from the scholastic flyers and they were a lot more than the books that were just in English. Overall, this booklet will do what I was hoping for. I hope my review helped you.
